LGBT+ people still face legal and social challenges in Nigeria. In Nigeria, homosexuality is still illegal and even punishable by imprisonment for up to 14 years. The country therefore has no legal protection for LGBT+ people.
Nigeria is a predominantly conservative country with more than 216 million inhabitants, divided between a Muslim north and a Christian south. Very few LGBT+ people are open about their sexual orientation, as violence against them is common. Many LGBT+ Nigerians therefore try to flee to other countries, which have laws protecting them.
Because I belong to the LGBT+ community, am an activist and because my work sometimes touches on this theme. I found the opportunity to participate in this exposition quite special. When I heard that the theme of the exhibition was "People and Survival", I was extra motivated to participate. I sent in part of my series ESTRANGED. This one is about the fact that some people don't dare to be 100% themselves, but keep a part of their identity hidden.
